Research Unit One (RUO) develops policy-oriented research and strategic analysis to support institutions, policymakers, international organizations and stakeholders facing the legal, technological and societal challenges of the twenty-first century.
Drawing upon comparative legal methodologies and interdisciplinary expertise, RUO contributes to the development of evidence-based policies, regulatory innovation and institutional resilience across Europe and the Euro-Mediterranean area.
Our policy activities focus on translating scientific research into practical recommendations capable of supporting decision-making processes at local, national and international levels.

Policy Areas

Artificial Intelligence and Criminal Justice

Analysis of the impact of artificial intelligence on criminal investigations, judicial decision-making, digital evidence, due process guarantees and algorithmic accountability.

Development of policy recommendations aimed at ensuring transparency, fairness, explainability and human oversight in AI-enabled justice systems.

RUO promotes policy-oriented research on confiscated assets and innovative governance models supporting social reuse and institutional resilience.

Through its work on IUU Fishing and environmental crime, RUO, also, contributes to the development of regulatory responses aimed at protecting marine ecosystems and strengthening enforcement mechanisms.
